Of all the elements, Moon is our most natural ally and guide to our transformation. Renewing and releasing, reflection and introspection, and beginning and endings are all inherent in the Moon’s natural 29-day cycle.
In magick, Moon is one of our most versatile allies. When she is new, we can work with her to set our intentions for the coming weeks, and when she is full, we celebrate those intentions coming to fruition. We charge our crystals, make Moon water, and gather in womxn circles (a collective of spiritual and witchy femme-identifying folxs) to commune with Moon. In astrology, we work with our Moon signs to understand our emotions, cravings, and the soul’s experience within its humxn body. In tarot, The Moon card references the underbelly, the shadow side, and secrets.
Working with Moon Magick
Moon magick for transformation cycles back to four of the eight skills shared in Magick for Transformation—Energy, Intention, Congruency and Self-leadership.
The energy and intentionality we bring to our Moon work directly dictate and impact the direction our focus will flow. The way we draw down that intentionality and energy into our daily lives, and live it out through our behaviors, actions, and choices, is directly proportional to how congruent and committed we are to hold ourselves accountable (self-leadership) to what we say we are going to do.
The beauty of working with Moon is her reassurance that we do not have to go at it alone. When we work with Moon for our personal transformation, we are doing so in divine connection and lineage of our ancestors.
Praxis: Building Better Connections
Oftentimes when we are working with Moon via our New Moon intentions, we are doing so in a two-dimensional way—on pen and paper. But Moon is alive! And basking in her energy, fullness, and shadows is a completely different experience. This is why, for this praxis, i’m going to ask you to relate to Moon in a more embodied way. Put away your Moon app, grab your grimoire and a pen, and just sit with Moon as she is. This is the kind of deep relationship Moon wants us to cultivate, not just with her, but will all our magickal tools, elements, and Earth:
- Go outside, wherever you need to find Moon in the night sky. Once you find her, make a note of where you are in your grimoire, so you can return to this place.
- For the next 20 minutes or so, i want you to gaze at Moon and feel her. Really see and sense her. Challenge yourself to move beyond your sensory comfort zone and the ways you would traditionally interact and work with Moon.
- Take out your grimoire but try not to write what you’re feeling. Sketch or doodle it out. Sketch whatever phase she’s in and any aspects of Rabbit you can see. Sketch what you hear, smell, and taste under this Moon. Shade in the shadows. If you feel called to write, see if you can describe whatever it is in a limerick or poem. If physical sight is not accessible to you, enter your relationship with Moon via whatever sense is.
- Repeat steps 1–3 for the next 30 nights. As you move throughout the 30 days, look up and see if you can find my favourite Moon of all—Day Moon. This is when Moon shows up in the day sky. If she does, spend some time sketching and sensing Day Moon too.
- When your 30 days are done, pull out your Personal Energy Map. See if you can align your sketches with the notes from that praxis. From the feelings and emotions you wrote down back then to the sketches and doodles you sense now, spend some time taking in the totality of your relationship with Moon.
