5 Minutes with Hilton Carter

Take a tour of Hilton Carter's plant-filled apartment and learn how to create your own urban jungle with the new book, Wild at Home. Having collected more than 200 plants over the years, Hilton's learned a thing or two about styling and caring for all sorts of houseplants, and now he's sharing his passion for bringing the outside in. We grabbed 5 minutes with the artist and author during his European book tour...

Wild at Home

Where does your passion for houseplants comes from?

My passion came from caring for my first plant, Frank, my fiddle leaf fig. Going through the trial and errors with him really made me who I am today and created that want to bring more greenery into my home.

What are the most important things to keep in mind when buying plants for the home?

The most important is knowing what type of light you have in your home and second, what type of time you have to commit to having a plant.

How much time do you spend caring for your plants each week?

I spend about 4-5 hours a week during spring and summer, and 3-4 during fall and winter.

What’s the best thing about living in an urban jungle?

It's the feeling you have when you're surrounded by plants. It's like being on vacation in your very own home. I think they call that a staycation.

What was your favourite part of writing Wild at Home?

Being able to share my journey in greenery was definitely my favorite part. It allowed me to open the door a bit more to my home and invite people in.

What can we look forward to from you over the next few months?

In the next few months I plan to put out more content on my Instagram and also to create much more video content!
